De esta manera se puede divertir sin manchar su nombre verdadero. Pero est\u00e1 enamorado de G\u00fcendolina Fairfax, arist\u00f3crata joven decidida a casarse con un hombre que se llame Ernesto. Las argucias de Algernon Moncrieff, primo de G\u00fcendolina, logran hacer confesar a Ernesto que su verdadero nombre es Juan y que tiene una joven protegida en su hogar en el campo llamada Cecilia Cardew. Todo se maneja por medio de mentiras, hasta que la temible Lady Bracknell interviene interrogando a Juan, quien debe revelar la verdad de su origen.
